What is the Asymmetric High/Low Kurtis
A kurti or kurta is an item of clothing that originates in India but which has become popular around the world thanks to its attractive look and versatile wearability. The asymmetric kurti is something else entirely but is quickly gaining popularity as an option for women in a wide range of situations.
What is the Asymetric Kurti?
To answer this question, first we need to look at what a kurti is itself!
So a kurti is essentially very similar to a long top, or a short dress, which can be worn over the top of a pair of leggings or jeans. This is a great option because it means you can wear something long and look quite formal at a wedding, or you can wear something short and make it into essentially a ‘summery top’. The fit is generally quite lose, and that has its advantages as well, making it something that can be worn when you don’t want to show too much of your figure – or when you want to go with tight fitting jeans.
Many Indian women use the kurti and kurta as a way to bring a more traditional style to their office wear, while at the same time looking modern. It’s also perfect for expats and second generation Indian women living in the US or Europe, as it offers the perfect item for both cultures. More and more women outside of India have been following suit too, thanks to the clear advantages of such a versatile item of clothing.
There is one difference between the kurti and the kurta. The kurti is a short version of the kurta, while the kurta is longer. The longer options as mentioned tend to come off more formal.
And so that’s where the asymmetric kurti comes in. It’s a kurti from one angle, and a kurta from another! In other words, it might be longer at the front than at the back, or vice versa. Otherwise, it might have a large slit down the middle.
This makes it an even more versatile item of clothing as the same outfit can now either serve the same role as a long dress, or a light, floral top!
Types of Asymmetric Kurti
While the design itself can be used in a range of settings, it is the pattern that is likely going to ultimately dictate where you find yourself wearing the kurti or kurta. You can today find kurti that use very modern patterns and synthetic fabrics, and that look perfectly at home in the office, or while relaxing around a friend’s.
How to Wear
At the same time though, you can also opt for the more heavily embroidered asymmetric kurti, which is far more well-suited to a formal occasion. The long-short kurti using an embroidered, modern pattern can also be a great fit for those that want to mimic the hippy look of the 60s when the style was very much in!
You also need to think about what you’re going to wear underneath or with the kurti. For a more traditional look, you have the option to wear with a fitted churidar or salwar. As mentioned, you can also wear this with jeans or with leggings if you want a more modern aesthetic.
Kurti look great with a wide range of different types of jewelry.
